The EF510 Series 300 is a dual-voltage electric locomotive introduced to replace the ED76 and EF81 series operating in Kyushu. While the previous 0 and 500 series, which were often used on DC sections, featured dynamic brakes, the 300 series is equipped primarily with AC regenerative brakes, as it is mainly operated on AC sections.
The design inherits the silver base color of the EF81 Series 300, complemented with navy and red stripes at the lower part of the body. It also continues the previous EF510's nickname, "ECO-POWER Red Thunder," with the logo displayed on the sides of the body. Mass production of the series began in 2024, with operations starting in March primarily on the Kagoshima and Nippo Main Lines.
From unit 302 onwards, the mass-produced models have some of the louvers on the sides and rooftop equipment sealed, making them visually distinct from the pre-production unit, 301.
