The ED76-1000 series was introduced in 1970, based on the 0 series, to accommodate high-speed trains hauling 20-series passenger cars and KOKI10000 type cars. A total of 23 units were manufactured.
From unit 1015, produced in 1979, the side windows of the driver's cab were changed to horizontal sash windows. Eighteen of the 1000 series units were transferred to JR Freight, with some units being updated, but they are gradually being replaced by the EF510-300 series.
