The ED76 series 0 number was introduced in 1965 as an AC electric locomotive for pulling passenger and freight trains within Kyushu. Based on the ED75 series, it featured a steam generator for passenger car heating and an extended body, along with a middle truck to accommodate increased weight.
After the division and privatization of Japan National Railways, the units belonging to JR Kyushu were primarily active in pulling passenger trains, but retired following the discontinuation of these services.
