Series EF81-450 is a locomotive introduced in 1991 to accommodate the increased freight traffic through the Kanmon Tunnel.
The 453-455 units had their light configurations modified to match previous models by using the body structure intended for the 500 series. The body paint scheme of the 500 series was retained, with the addition of a blue stripe along the lower part of the body.
