The first group of the EF65-1000 series was manufactured for replacement of the 500 series used on the Tohoku Main Line. Initially, these units did not feature a visor, which was later added only above the front windows. However, it was not added above the light, resulting in a different appearance compared to the group led by unit 1018. Unit 1001 maintained its original JNR color scheme until 2008 and now is preserved at the Tokyo Freight Terminal Station.
