The EF510 series 500 subclass is a dual-voltage electric locomotive introduced in 2009 to replace the EF81 series at JR East's Tabata Depot, which was active in hauling the sleeper limited express trains "Hokutosei," "Cassiopeia," and freight trains.
The Hokutosei color scheme features a blue body with a gold stripe and shooting star on the sides, with 13 units produced. The Cassiopeia color scheme features a silver body with a five-color shooting star on the sides, with 2 units produced, making a total of 15 units. These locomotives began operations in 2010, but with the discontinuation of the regular "Hokutosei" and "Cassiopeia" services, all units were transferred to JR Freight by 2016.
